No worries Jen, I love answering questions about these guys. He won't eat while he is holding, my poor falx had to wait for two weeks! The foerschi will probably hold 8 - 14 days, if he actually does.

cometcattle - He's always got the red gill bars, but they do get quite a bit deeper and brighter when he's spawning. Now they'll fade, since he's being a good brooding papa... so far.



Thanks everyone! They were spawning at 2 o'clock in the morning last night, so I finally said that's it, and turned off their light. I gotta sleep sometime. This morning I reseperated them and the female is ready to eat. So far so good with dad, he's hanging around tumbling eggs.

Well.. he swallowed them. *bawls*

I'm mad at him. He gets an A+ for his lovin', he's one great lover, but he gets an F- for fathering.

My theory is this - he swallows them as soon as they start hatching. I don't know if he knows quite what to do with a whole bunch of moving things in his mouth, and can ya blame him? As Sorrell said, if things in your mouth started wiggling, you'd probably gasp too!!


Oh well, we'll try again in a few weeks hopefully. Thanks everyone for the comments.

Ugh, sorry to hear that Julie...I so wanted to see pictures of the babies. This seems to be a very common thing, whenever I read about someones mouthbrooders who have spawned, the father always ends up swallowing them Have you read anything that may help to explain why or anything you can do to stop it?

Maybe he just needs a few trys at it before getting it right...like this was a practice round, and he'll do better each time?
