moss balls

Simple question, are moss balls just java moss rolled up or is it a differant plant?

I'm not a plant expert, but I'm pretty sure its a different plant. Java moss doesn't grow that tightly, it spreads out. Its also much finer from what I've seen.
 
Moss balls are not a plant at all but a type of algae called Cladophora, they are normally found in shallow lakes where the movement of the water forms the algae into a spherical shape, turn them regularily and they will retain the spherical shape in the aquarium.
 
The flow of the water basically makes moss roll into a roll like you would do with cookie dough with your hand.
