I have a fancy goldfish tank and was hoping to put in a piece of mopani wood that i have been soaking for a month , however i have now read that it can lower PH , as my ph is already 6.4-6.6 so quite low for goldies . I dont really want it to drop any further. Do you think this will be an issue Im trying to make more swimming room and the plants i have take up quite a bit so i wanted to cut down on them and go with the smaller wood, the water is pretty clear now when i empty the bucket with the wood in but do i need to do anything else with it before i add it like boil it or anything ?

It will lower your Ph.

Wood takes up more swimming room than plants.

If you are worried, just stay with the plants & thin them out a bit.

The wood would be a lot lower than the plants (which are fake tall bushy things ) so would give more mid tank room which is where my fish like to swim .

Sorry i dint realise you had fake plants.

My advice?

Get some wood & some Combumba plants. Result? Much nicer looking natural tank.

On the other hand, I recommend that you go for some reef bones instead of wood and, same as Tom, plants. For goldfish, I recommend Anubias because they will shred almost every other type of plant that I can think of… when I lived in Japan, we used to get Cabomba from a local stream to feed the goldfish. Free Cabomba? Permanently planted goldfish tanks.

Tom, apparently Combumba is something one smokes, the internet tells me ;)

I just had a look at combumba it looks like it could be nice and natural looking thanks tom , Im going to look in some fish shops nearby. Anubias might be an idea too I dont really want them shredding everything . Im a rubbish gardener though(will this matter ) . I need something that can kinda take care of itself once the intial work of putting it in is done

I really did want to get the wood in there especially since i spent so much time soaking the darn thing.

LOL

I have a similar dilemma with my pH - I'm considering getting a reddish coloured rock or resin "wood" instead.

oh not heard of resin wood might have a looksy thanks :good:
