Well I have just soaked my piece of mopani wood in a bucket of water for a week now, then yesterday I boiled it for about 3 hours. Then after that I soaked it agian in a bucket over night to see if it is still leaking tannins, and this morning I looked, and sure enough it is.

I am just curious, for all of you people out there that have mopani wood, how long did you soak it before the tannins stopped leaking out, or how long did you soak it beofre you just decieded to throw it in you tank?

Thanks, I just want to get an idea how much longer I will need to soak it for.

EDIT: Can you find Mopani/bog/drift wood outside around my neck of the woods?(Wisconsin USA)

Thanks!

I have had wood leak tannins into my tank for over 8 months. I kinda like the look of it ( or atleast im USED to the look of it)

What i did was boil it for a week and then i stuck it in my tank. The tanins do still come out but not much.

It takes 6 days for my water colour to turn into tea colour. I don't mind it the tannins.

Thanks for those replies!

So after you put it in your tank it turned the water to a tea color, than, if it did or not, how long did it take for the water to clear up after the wood was placed in the tank?

Thanks again for those replies!

This has always puzzled me. Every time I've added any to the tank, I've bought it on my way to work on a night shift. Eleven hours soaking in the kitchen sink at work (changing the water every hour) and a quick rinse when I get home usually gets most of the tannins out. There's still some leaching, of course, but I like the effect and it can be beneficial to the fish, of course. Maybe I'm just lucky.

I soaked my piece for months in the toilet cistern and it still turned my water brown. Just something you have to deal with for a while.

Yeah, I guess I will just have to deal with the color for a while. But hey, I might actually like it!?

Thanks again guys for all the input and help/advice!
