I got some wood from petco which was labeled as Mopani wood. The directions said to soak the wood for a few days, changing the water daily until it didn't change color anymore in order to prepare the wood for use. I've been soaking it for a week now and have changed the water 5 times (I was gone for a few days) and it still is turning the water a definite orange. I've read that you can boil the wood too, but I don't have a big enough pot and that makes me a bit nervous. Is this normal for it to take so long to prep?

I had the same problem with a large chunk of wood i have. If you have a pot large enough, you can try boiling it a couple times to speed it along.

Pour boiling water over it several times to kill off bacteria, give it a rinse and you should be able to put it in your tank. It will leach tannins into the water which is perfectly fine and sometimes prefered by fish. If you find it unsightly you can do water changes or add active carbon to your filter :)

I put it in my tank a few days ago and it is turning it a bit orangish, but I sort of like it. Thanks for your suggestions.
