Hi guys So i went the LFS to get some decorations for my tank and found a lovely chunk of mopani wood.

i got up this morning and it looked like a cup of tea had been brewed in my tank , i was like WT hell!!!

i have since taken the wood out to soak, so in your experience... how long will it take for the tannins soak out of the wood?
the woods about the size of a human head.

your help is very much appreciated :good:

thanks guys

You can soak it for a few weeks in hot water, changing the water daily, but has said above the tannins will continue to leak out...

I like the look of tannins and its good for the fish :good: if you dont like it do some water changes and add carbon to the filter to remove it :)

Mopani wood if the worse for Tannins imo compared to some bogwoods

I bought some lovely pieces of mopani on friday (one had a hole perfect for a plant I have) - £1.99 a piece from the range for all you UK people...

I poured boiling water on them (each in seperate tubs) and immediately the tannins started coming out. I kept chenging the water when it went cold for fresh boiling water. 1 piece had no tannins coming out by saturday night, the other 2 pieces are still kicking it out though :( although I'm in no rush for these pieces (1 is for my main tank but I'm letting my new gourami settle first, and the second piece is for my nano tank for work for the wee cherries I plan to get). With the deep chocolate colouration of mopani though, it's no wonder they release tannins so regularly. I think it looks cool, but some people dont understand that it's natural, the water isn't dirty and it doesnt harm the fish.

personally i think its better to put them in the tank. constantly boiling water to replace cold water is pretty labour intensive, and wont be doing your electricity bill much good. your tank water is already warm, tannins look good, good for the fish, and as you do your usual water changes, you will be removing the tannin anyway. i just put boiled water on mine a couple of times to kill anything, and clean it.
