Moonlights. Did You Buy Them?

I would put moon lights on my tanks if they weren't in my bed room. I couldn't sleep with those lights on...

I have blue leds on my Coralife 72" deluxe lights for my 125 gallon (473 liter) tank. They give a nice effect. I have 2 Coralife leds that I put on a 20 gallon long tank and they do not look as nice. The reason is the blue leds on the 20 gallon long give a spot light effect, since the tank height is lower at 12" high, compared to my 125 gallon tank, which is 22" high, even thought the 125 gallon has about 5 leds and the 20 gallon long only has 2 leds. There are some DIY info regarding using cold cathode light tubes used on computers for moonlighting effect. This type of lighting spreads out more and gives a nicer look. Some DIY info has a variable power control, so you can adjust the intensity of the light. Otherwise, the light will be to bright and will not really look like a moon lighting, but just regular daylights with blue spectrum.

I have a 40 gal tank with a moonlight its a blue led 17w and I think its lovely, its very subtly, not blue looking and although it is like a spotlight with carefull placing it spreads out and creates shadows on the water, also my fish seem to enjoy it, the Gourimis sit directly under it and the other more timid fish like the peppered corys come out and ' play ' I have set mine usuing a timer to come on 10 mins before light out and stay on for 2 hrs after. Oh and by the way I got it from Ebay. around Â£35 plus postage.

I've got cold cathode's on mine - hubby's into computers so got him to make them for me, didn't cost a lot - so far have lasted a LOT longer than the LED's I had before, probably just my bad luck with those.

The cold cathodes work a treat - We have them on our zebra tank in our bedroom

If you get an adjustable voltage adapter - turn it to 6V and you'll have a nice dim blue light - the fish that wnat to sleep still will and once your eyes adjust you'll be able to see the active ones, and still be able to sleep

The are nice for plecos and catfish that are more active at night. I do think they are more for looks.

Moonlights are used mostly in saltwater tanks to promote coral growth, although they are used in freshwater tanks as decor, a way of viewing the "night-life", and as a nightlite for those who choose. I just purchased one off Ebay for fairly cheap, and i hope to receive it fairly soon.

I have 3 different strip lights on my fish tank, one of which is a moonlight but I can't switch it on because it makes my 2 angelfish scrap. They usually get on fine. No idea why -_-
