For xmas i got alot of cash...now the hard part, deciding where to put it?

I can either get a nice canister filter for my 55 gallon tank, which currently has 2 cheapo filters, (both tetra tech, one rated for 60 gallons, one for 40) or i can get a little 10 gallon tank, (contents to be determined)

what do you think i should invest in ?

thanks!!

give those fish a new filter! christmas may have already passed, but its still better to give than recieve, haha.

If you're happy with the filters and they do a good job then I see no reason to change them.

get a new filter and stick in it your current tank. In the meantime it will cycle the new filter and then save some money or maybe your birthday is close by and you'll get more cash to buy a new tank for your newly cycled filter. then= instant fish adding!

thanks for all the replies...i just got back from the snow, so nice...anyways i guess ill have to get that filter lol

it depends on how much "a lot" is. a, descent, filter to replace the 40g unit, would be my first choice. but a "Quarantine" or Hospital tank, could well pay for itself very quickly.
you could remove your single heater, and replace it with two! two 150's would do just as good a job as one 300. but would not boil or freeze your fish if you have a fault!

i already have two 150 heaters lol...thanks for the idea tho...also i have $130 that i got...plus i have $50 more coming in the mail...

i do have a ten gallon tank right now but there are tiger barb fry in it atm...

Edit: also i was wondering what type of filter i should get...been looking at Eheims and Fluvals...is one better than the other?

I have the fluvals, imo, they are alot of work, and annoying to maintance, but then again, I tinker with my filters to make them suit my needs...
some ppl have had problems with the fluvals cracking, or the o ring getting damaged, and when that happens, youd be surprised how soon ur tank drains out. I had that happen once, I solved the leakage emergency by dropping the whole cannister into the tank until i could fix it...

and i find that a tub of vaseiline does wonders for problem avoidance.

Ive never used any other cannisters, so I cant give any advice their.

Eheims are like the Jaguar's of filters, most who use them swear by them for their reliability and performance. Fluvals are like a 20 year old banger. Poor performance, reliability issues and difficult to work IME. Tetratec are also a good alternative, like a new Ford Focus. There are better ones out there, but not for that money ;) This is of course for exturnals, internals have the reverse. Fluval internals are the crem de la crem, Eheim the cheap S?#* and the Tetratecs still the Ford Focus...

For a 55g on exturnals, I'd look at;

Eheim 2028's
Tetratec EX1200's
Fluval 405's

In that order...

All the best
