Mini Discus

djceri_g, your the harsh one, you have one discus on its own in a tank with other tant mates its like a uman living with lions. not very nice. rehome it or get it some friends! o and especially in a 96l. !!

1 * common plec
5 * Tetra Neon (all kulled due to NTD!)
1 * Congo Tetra
5 * Guppies (1 Male and 4 Female) and FRY!!
1 * Kooli Loach
1 * Red Snakeskin Discus

Discus angel is right, why have you got a discus in a tank like that.As for the plecos, sam i wouldn't do it with commons or sailfins etc, i'm no pleco man (lol) so i don't know every incompatible species.I've lost track of the thread and probably am confusing matt.I'll read through the whole thing tommorow.

matt, id listen to kev_kb. seems to kno alot about the subject and i think he actually has experience with discus.
I agree, sometimes i forget what i am talking about

As said above, why in the F#@%ng world would do you do water changes multiple times a day? twice a week is enough. Plus you should be overfiltering your discus tank anyway so why couldnt you add plecs?

Ok, this thread is drifting away. :shout: Matt could you make a list of your q's and i'll do the best to answer them, and am sure others will.I am totally lost lol.

Thanks, and yes I do have plenty of experience with them. I have 5 at the moment with one egg laying pair, though I have not attempted to raise any fry as I do not currently have the time or space to dedicate to them.

Truth is you will get different opinions when it comes to discus, you just need to put the time into researching them and eventually you will find the good advice out weighing the bad. These really are not fish you can just go out and buy with no research, they have specialist requirements and you need to provide for them.

If you ignore the advice from people saying its ok to keep them in really hard water and you buy decent fish you'll be fine.

I'd also like to point out (in a nice way lol) that I find some of CheesyFeets posts confusing. In some he says that he probably did stunt his fish by his actions when he first got them and in other posts he says its fine to keep them in hard tap water....

absolutely correct

30 years ago discus were considered practically impossible to keep, however relatively recent advances in our understanding of aquariums and the products available to us have made it easier. However as things are moving on all the time you're unlikely to find any set answers and it can be confusing wading through loads of information which is often conflicting.

All the advice I can offer you is do your own research and take your time, while your tank is maturing you have plenty of time to learn, you'll soon get a feel for whose advice you can and can't take and you've got to make up your own mind.

good luck.

I did stunt them when i first got them. The hard water did not though (maybe it did but it was not the main reason), it was from my lack of water changes.I just could not keep up with the maintenance.Tank bred discus are obviously becoming more hardy, 30 years ago if someone said they put a discus in a tank with a high pH it would flop over dead lol ( i have plenty of books about them ).If i have to state this a million times i will, my discus are not effected by the hard water.Well atleast to some extent. They come from the amazon yes, live in dark tanned water with low pH etc .Well ofcourse they will grow better and be happier in the water conditions more like it is for them in the wild. All i am trying to say is that it is ok to keep discus in hard water if you cannot buy a Reverse osmosis unit or RO water.O and btw i am 13 and did get confused what i was writing as i said :shifty: Of ill today so am just lazing on the computer..

Most people actually change there sig or tank list when they by new fish. And if it says that is what you have we are going to pressume that it is.

IMO the hard water is a contributing factor and I think you've said enough. At the end of the day I think if you cannot keep any fish in ideal conditions due to lack of time/cash/resources then you simply shouldn't keep them.

Yes, i said it probably it is another factor, i said that obvously it's not their natural water conditions and that some way or another it is going to do harm .
^ Oo but i had a reason to.My first discus i bought were my brilliant turks. I put them in my tropiqaurium 88 by themselves would buy 15 gals of RO water of the breeder every 4 days.Couple of months later i went back to buy another discus because i was getting on well, however i found out the breeder was going to move in a couple of months and had to clear out all of his discus. He gave me a bargain price and as no body else was there to take them i did.He gave me filters and other bits n bobs aswell for them.

The sad fact is they would have been better off if you had left them with the breeder. They would have hopefully been sold/given to someone with the time/resources/ability to raise them properly to their full potential.

No, the sad fact is if i did not take them who knows where they would of gone, he had no other interest and needed to get rid of them quickly. He was literally packing his bags when i went to him.

lol sorry i put above that he was going to move in a couple of months but it was much sooner.
