So I've been organising this tank for a quite a while now. This is the tank after I'd cleaned it :)

Then I painted the back and half the sides with chalkboard paint

Then I took all the things out of my main tank that have been maturing for quite a while and built the tank

Question - Do I need to do something about the overhang or is it ok on a small tank like this (10g) ?

Then this morning we went to get Errol - that's his name for now. My BF is trying to come up with a "really cool name" (his words!!) so far I have vetoed "Mr Miagi"(!??!) and "Daniel Son" again (!!!??!) Errol does seem to be sticking especially as my neighbour said oh as in "Errol Finn" :D (yes she does know it's really Errol Flynn!)

He was a bit camera shy this morning

He's definitley got character - when I was just sitting there watching him he was ok but as soon as he saw the camera he kept swimming away!! I have lots of pics of his bum :D

Then he discovered artemia and suddenly he was happy to stay at the front while I took pics (who new the way to a betta's heart was through his stomach!!

I went to the shop with a very particular colour in my mind and there was one there just like I wanted but this guy just caught my eye and was really nosey when we were standing there looking at them all so he kind of chose me!!

Can you tell I'm smitten

ETA - spelling!!

Thats a neat little set up.

Good idea on painting the back and half side of the tank, helps stop direct sunlight coming in the tank and causing algae havoc, though you may paint the entire sides if alage starts creeping in that way. See what happens.

Errol (Flynn) is a cool name btw, though am not so sure of the Karate Kid references of Mr Miyagi and Danial San........there are cooler names than those :p

As for the overhang of the tank from the sill....well I'm a perfectionist when it comes to stuff like that and it would bug me mad if I left it like that, but its probably ok if its like less than a inch of overhang but I've never personally tried that so not 100% on that side of things tbh.

The betta is a good looking boy, nice colours, I especially like the dash of red fin on his front :)

I love blue Bettas my Crowntail is the same color,
Not keen on the tank overhanging like that puts unnecessary strain on the glass and there is a risk of it cracking.

Thanks - I'm hoping that as I don't get too much direct sunlight I will be ok on the algae front! If not I may need to come up with a different location but I like him where he is as I can see him when I'm working. Although I have a feeling he may be a bit of a distraction from work!!

TBH I don't like the overhang either really. It doesn't suit my OCD neat and tidy personality nor do I like the idea of putting additional strain on the tank, so I'm off to a timber merchants next week to get a piece of wood large enough to go under all of the tank and fill in the gap between the window sill and my desk.

He's a gorgeous fish and very feisty. I was convinced I didn't want a blue one but when I saw him it was different! He was so inquisitive. In the flesh he is almost a purple colour and that red at the front looks great.

I've wanted a Betta for years so to finally have one is great - I keep going upstairs just to sit and look at him. I don't think I'll be very productive tomorrow!!
