Hi Everyone,

I am new to the forum and looking for some advise on Marino Moss balls. I have seen these mentioned a few times so decided to quikcly read up on them and noticed they were good for attracting debris or catching it in the water etc and easy to clean and looked nice so I decided to buy two from the ebay link below.

I decided to read a bit futher and it looks like they could potnetionally create massive problems with algae growth on other things and I am wondering if its worth the risk. I am new to this so help would be appreiciated.

I have a fluval edge 2 tank, 10g. I have some rocks in there, one plastic plant, the tank has been running for approx 7 weeks and has had 6 black strip tetra neons for the last 4 weeks, i intend to add 3 or 4 guppies too at some stage in a week or so.

Advise on the marino moss balls would be much appricated.

Thanks

I have one in both my tanks and have no problem with extra algae. The only times my tanks get algae are when I leave the curtains open because in all the rooms in the house there is no avoiding direct sunlight unless the curtains stay shut - that's nothing to do with the moss balls.

Moss balls will not cause Algea to grow, if anything they would help it not to.

I have one in each of my tanks & I haven't seen any additional algae growth whatsoever. They do help keep nitrates in check though................just like any live plants would.

I have 5 big marino moss balls in my aquarium and see nothing bad about them, they reduce around 10 ppm of nitrate.

Contrary to belief marimo balls do very little for n03, as they are that slow growing, the faster growing stems are good n03 eaters. They won't cause algae either.

As everyone has said they wont cause problems and they are ideal if you ever have fry as they contain plenty of infusoria which is ideal fry food. :good:
