Marimo balls

The lfs had a few Marimo balls in so I bought 1. It is all green with no brown spots like a few of them had.
My problem, or really my question is this. The ball has a tear in it, almost half way through. Should I rip it completely in half, and will I then have 2 balls, ....... in my aquarium. Or should I place a rubber band around it, and will it grow back together?
Just looking for input form others who have had experience with these.

you can use some small string, like dental floss, so when it grows it grows over it that way you don't have to remove it, but what is this ball use for, i read links and things, but doesn't explain the purpose of using them.

Zak I think they just look cool, no real purpose.

Only input I can offer is ... mine don't seem to "grow" much. If you split them, they may stay small for quite a while.
