Male Guppy - Possible Velvet

Wife has just noticed one of the male Guppies has a cotton wool like fungussy growth just under his dorsal.


Can we use treatment with fry in the tank or will he need to be isolated?


Or is it better to remove the fry to another tank and treat the main tank?

Water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.

The cotton stuff on him what colour is it as it sounds like columnaris to me.

56 litre, 600mm x 350mm x 350mm ish.


Just tested : Ammonia 0, Nitrate 10, Nitrite 0. PH 7.6

3 Mature Male Guppies and 7 Guppy Fry.


White growth, sort of fluffy like cotton wool.


Can the tank be treated in the presence of fry?

It sound like columnaris to me read that link I left.
Do you have an issolation tank you could move the fry too.
Its more the parasite meds with fry.

Velvet looks like a fish has been dusted in goldust, or painted in a brown golden varnish, or tiny yellow golden spots.
Also it can look like the fish has been dusted in talc.

Is it possible just to isolate the infected male? How contagious is the infection?

Depends on the strain of bacteria.
Do you have a spare tank.
Water changes on the main tank for a few days.
Columnaris lives in the background in a tank it when a fish is stressed they can break out in it as there immune
system is weak and stress also thins the slime coat,.

Meds for columnaris in the uk myxazin by waterlife and pimafix.
Both meds can be used together.

Male isolated. I think it has got him too quickly though. His tail is split down the middle and he is very lethargic.



Is it best to move the fry also? Would they be able to transfer the infection to another tank?


Is Interpet Med #8 OK for treatment? (Anti Fungus & Finrot)

As long as you match ph and temp the fish will be ok to move.
You can transfer desease yes.
The interpet med not that good on columnaris but add it to see if it helps with the sick male.
He dosn't sound to good i'm afraid.
Don't forget to increase aeration with the med as it reduces 02 in the water.
Also remove black carbon from the filter if you use it.
