Male Gourami/betta Compatibilty

Evening all, hope this thread finds you all well.

I currently have a male Dwarf Gourami, i lost the female after 2 weeks with D.G disease being the most likliest culprit. The only other fish i have that may be of some sort of problem MAY be my Goldfinch-Tetra, which although are not 'fin-nippers' in any way they can be boisterous, especially at feeding time!

I have read into the possible chance of housing a Betta AND a male D.G together, but have not really found anything of stern advice or opinion.. and as i never see them both in users' signatures i tend to think they wouldn't get along.

I have the choice of housing a Betta in my 30L, but there is always the option of having one in 120L provided it would co-exist with my D.G. My LFS that i use contact me periodically when female D.G's are available, so at the moment that maybe my main option.

But as always. any reply highly appreciated.

You say this...I have kept a betta in with 3 male goruamis for well over a year and they get on with no problems whatsoever. Many people have had bad experiences and while I don't freely recommend you put them together, I know it can work depending on the temperament of both fish.

I thought as much.. i have just read also that a Betta is a kind of Gourami in alot of respects, which would explain the behaviour i would want to avoid.

Oh well, back to the 'what shall i do with my 30L tank' drawing board then..

The general opinion is that no you won't be able to house them together, but it depends on the nature of the fish as with all fish. Pot luck and trial and error spring to mind.

i know a friend has a gourami & angel with her bettas but its a 260l i think

Thank you minnnt, if there is any doubt that they will not get along then i am not prepared to trial and error it myself, it would unfair to the peaceful community i currently have in there.

+1 I do agree with this.

At first my gold gourami used to be flared at by the betta, but this only lasted around 2-3 days. They've been together for ages now and they swim alongside each other and take no notice. I don't think this is common although the shop where I purchased them both from keeps gouramis and bettas together. If you do decide to put them together, watch them for a while and remove the betta into the 30L if there is any aggression.

Many thanks for the replies. The option of possibly moving the Betta into my 30L tank is a limited one unfortunatly, as that tank maybe going to my dad's for a few years... long enough for our new arrival (Mid Jan) to grow out of the pram that the space is needed for and to, hopefully, show an interest in my big tank.. maybe a few years down the line they will have that tank and learn to look after it themselves

But as i say, if there is any doubt as to wether these 2 can co-exist then it wont happen at the current time.

They can co-exist but likely NOT in a small tank. I have male and female pearl and honey gourami with my male and female betta all housed peacefully together in a 140g tank. Tank size is the key and you would be amazed what you can get away with in a large tank. You will hear all the unsuccessful stories of housing them together in a small tank because it's a very bad idea to keep them with each other in a tank smaller than at least 50 gallons IMO.
