My male Betta, Alan, has been eating in a strange manor lately.
Usually, he would eat up the food pellets (Hikari Betta Bio-Gold) straight away, but for the past week or so, he just sits there looking at them. Eventually when he tries to eat it, he catches it, but lets it go. He usually swims around like this, dropping the pellet about 3 times before giving up.
I'm not sure how to help him, so any help will greatly appreciated. Thank you :)

Right, so i just tried the bloodworms, he doesn't seem too interested in them...
It almost seems as if he is having trouble chewing or swallowing food...

Thats a bit strange, did u feed Frozen bloodworms? They should be easier to eat. My Old Betta loved those. how often do u feed him? theyre stomach suppose to be the size of their eye. I used to feed mine very little amount once or twice a day. Some people feed them peas, suppose to be good for their digestive system.

If it hasnt eaten for days, maybe u should take a picture and post it in the emergency section. Could be sick. Or somebody else here could help u out. Good Luck

Bump.

Hi, is that a picture of Alan in your avi?

How many pellets have you been feeding and how often?

Have you seen him poo recently? am thinking he may be consitpated, give him a piece of cooked deshelled pea :good:

Oh no I see this problem pop up with me now and again. Its like they are coming down with a cold and they have a sore throat. It may be the first sign of an illness...check your water parameters.

u can try this if ur fish wont eat the fod
i ussualy dont feed em for a day or two and the next day i give em the new menu
like when u ussually gave em pellet and like to change the menu to frozen bloodworms

hope it work for u

try flake food
also skip 2 or 3 days of feeding
for example if you feed him on monday, dont feed him again 'til thursday (or if u get worried- wednesday)
try an every- other-day feeding schedule

when bettas get older, they can't digest as much food~feed him less often or smaller amounts
:)

Thank you for all your replies.

He hasn't been eating at all. He just hangs out around the bottom of the tank, coming up for air occasionally.
I put about 2 small pellets in for him, and he just can't swallow them.
Same for the deshelled pea, bloodworms etc. He just can't swallow anything.

I'll check all the water parameters.

By the way, that is my Betta, Alan, in my avi.

PROBLEM SOLVED!
He was having some trouble chewing the hard pellet, so I did soaked the pellet in some tank water before feeding him.
It worked perfectly. He is already much more active and happy after eating.

Thank you all so much for all your help, it's greatly appreciated :D
