I was feeding all of my fish grindal worms and I fed them as much as they could safely consume. But I still have a plastic cup with 1/4" of pure grindals on the bottom. So instead of tossing them out I was wondering if its safe to freeze them in the little cube trays that you buy frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp :hyper: ? Also could you do this with shelled and chopped peas and with other live foods like microworms? If you can about how long would they last in the freezer? :)

I make a concoction just like that for my piranhas with quite a few more things added along with gelatin. It's a great way to have them eat all the veggies they normally wouldn't.

Edit: As far as how long it lasts I'm not sure as I've never had to worry about that much but I know it lasts at least half a year.

i was about to try the same thing a while ago. i still got some seaweed agar from my attempt. the whole thing was kinda gross though because i kinda blended bloodworms, brine shrimp, and some kind of vitamin in there. i never used it though because it looked like puke

You need to add some gelatin to keep it together or else you'll just make soup.

You can also freeze them in those fancy ice cube trays that make small ice cubes. I did this years ago with homemade baby food and put the frozen cubes in freezer bags,

If you have like a 3 star freezer then it should last fine for abotu 3-6 months, as long as the frost doesnt get into it and the temperature is maintained then it will be fine for years its just that after a few months it will lose its nutrional value. Don't hold me to that but thats about what my manager at work told me and hes worked in the food industry for about 25 years.

Miksters right. Different foods can be kept for varying amounts of time before the nutritional value fades away. If they sell frozen near you you can check the expiration dates on the packages to get an approximate storage life for yours and go from there.

Would a vacuum food saver bag prolong the life of homeade frozen food. it does for our food , so it might for fish food. just a thought.

I found a bag of frozen jumbo shrimp, at the time I was having trouble getting my betta to eat, and well lets just say curiosity got the best of me! lol! i chopped it up into tiny chunks, and he ate it like mad, chomping it and shaking it! he loves it but thats all i have ever done for frozen foods.

Well we made our own frozen food cubes in an ice cube tray. I guess they last the same as frozen food from a store.

We just used peas and sprouts though and haven't tried freezing live food yet. We just used pureed peas and sprouts in tapwater that we declorinated just a we do when we do water changes and stuff. So it was basically tank water with peas in that was frozen. The fish love it and its very cheap to do.
