Maidenhead - Peterborough

Great :good: well I'll definately come back for more pandas, hopefully you can get the melanotaenia because I've been after some of them for a while now, don't worry about the frogs, one of the lfs does stock them just it's every few months they get them, at the moment they have ordinary african clawed frogs but labelled as dwarf frogs  so I'll just have to play the waiting game :)

I think I'll be able to visit again in 2 or 3 weeks time so I'll PM you when I'm thinking of coming to make sure your there and have some pandas :)

We're running slightly off topic here. The only input I will put to the dead-fish subject is this: we have over 10,000 fish on 9 different filtration systems (marine fish, marine inverts, tetra/barbs, livebearer/gourami, loaches/cichlids, softwater, fancy goldfish, pond fish and koi). We check hourly for dead fish and any we see in between these checks times are quickly wisked out. The only time we won't grab a dead fish is if we are serving (in which case we get somebody else to do it). Not making excuses but when you have 10k+ of different sized fish it is extremely difficult to get every single dead one. I would say, on average, we lose no more than 20 a day, which when you consider how many are coming in and out isn't a bad total.

Ok we get dead fish and sometimes it is hard keeping track of all the tanks but no fish should be at the stage where there are bits of fish floating around, that means that the tank hasn't been checked for at least 2/3 days in tropical tanks.

I disagree. Take for example our Neon Tetra sale tank which is the standard two foot. It can at any one time contain 50 Neons, 20 Bronze Cories and countless cherry shrimp for sale. If a neon were to die it would take hours not days for it to be eaten to a point that it seems like it's been there for days (the problem is when people's fish die at home, it would take days, so instantly assume it's been there for days, which it hasn't)

The only dead fish I see are at Maidenhead Aquatics, but that's because I hardly ever go to the other place and the other place has lots of high up tanks. Maidenhead Aquatics are very good and I usually always go there for my fish. Good prices too, they match internet prices on tanks and stuff, or beat them.

to go off topic slightly has anyone been to the maidenhead aquatics in solihull? ive just looked on their website and found its there, so might take a visit this afternoon. im excited now, the only store near me that ive found that has a decent stock of fish is shirley aquatics but they often dont seem to know what theyre talking about

just been to the maidenhead aquatics in solihull, it was brilliant. great selection of fish the tanks were all very clean and the bloke there was very helpful. they also had blue rams wahooo! there were some gorgeous big panda corys there too, i wish i could get some but already have 4 peppered and one bronze and want to increase it to 4 bronze so dont have room :(
i'll be going back in a few weeks once my tanks all sorted to get some new fish though :)

Lol I went to MA in Peterborough once about some Hystrix rays they had lol they were retics and they wanted a stupid price for them and the one with the knowledge on rays had no idea so I wont be going back.

yep and he got all embarrassed when I showed him up infront of his staff and starting raising his voice quiet a knob really. He didnt like the fact I wouldnt pay £100 each for his "hystrix" that were clearly retics that I can get for £50 each.

lol, MA are usually over priced for fish anyway, and 90% of the staff i've had dealings with are idiots.

Though i have to say i was pleasantly suprised and impressed by the staff at the Weybridge branch last week, the selection of fish was mainly the usual collection of tiddlers and bread and butter fish but the staff were helpfull, friendly and had good common sense. The guy who served me patiently netted the exact two small red terrors i wanted from the sump tank out of the 20 or so other red terrors in there and they done me a good deal on 5 large red hook silver dollars which i am collecting this weekend :good:

Don't bother with the one in Barnstaple, went there in September and what a dissapointment, tanks were overstocked and the plants were dying, I was so dissapointed after all the good reports I'd had about Maidenhead shops.

Staff were friendly but totally lacking in knowledge or even the type of fish they had.

Some of the fish were dead and had been for quite a while.

This is not my experience of these guys at all. Their fish have always seemed really healthy to me. In addition, they have a good selection and often have new species in stock. While not all the staff know everything there is to know, there is a core of more experienced staff who are always happy to help and have provided me with really sound advice. For me, that's absolutely fine - afterall LFS staff have to start somewhere, so what's wrong with inexperienced staff knowing less?

What's more, I've never seen a dead fish in there - probably because whenever I have visited, there is someone tending the tanks.

I love maidenhead aquatics at Wyvale in Teignmouth they are brilliant and have ordered me many fish even the chilli rasboras which a lot of shops wont touch nano fish
The staff are excellent and very friendly all the fish look healthy and i have spent a lot of money and purchased a lot of fish in there and i only had one fish die (a glass catfish was dead on the way home ) i rang them and i went there today and they gave me a new glass cat right away as soon as i got in the door lol i didnt even have to ask (ok i been going there a while so they know me now)

I have to agree that the MA Peterborough is the best one for miles around, I nearly always go there for plants and its the only place I would get rainbows from as the stock is always fresh, they do ask a few questions about your tank which is always an encouraging sign. Another vote from me :good:

The MA at Cambs is only 30 mins from Huntingdon and its on the right side of cambs for you. They have loads of diffrent types of plec but their stock isnt as well organised.

I go to the maidenhead in hillingdon.

They have huge range of fish, good staff and they keep their live stoch in good conditions.

They also tell you the basic inf on the fish your going to buy.
