I was sitting watching the re-run of Doctor Who and I just happened to glance over to gourami tank only to see them both out and about swimming. I sauntered on over to watch them as they seemed to be engaged in some kind of dance, circling around each other and swmming in a T-Shape.

I watched fascinated for a few moments then faintly, but distinclty heard a croaking sound emitting from the bigger fish, amazing! I watched a couple more moments and I heard it again a couple of times!

Fantastic. I assume this is breeding behaviour, but if so, I'm slightly puzzeled as I haven't seen any bubble nest building from the male. Does this follow after the behaviour I have seen or should it preceed it?

(quote from book)
when spawning, both male and female make an audible croaking sound
sorry, dont know the answer to any other questions, i just remembered seeing something about it in my book. :)
p.s. before anyone asks, i dont have a clue what 'audible' means :X

It means you are able to hear it, i.e it is within the range of human hearing. Think audio.

aaaaah of course......silly me :X audio, audible :)
anyhoo, good luck with the gouramis and good luck with the eggs/babys if they are spawning :D

That's awesome, I love croakers. I had some for about 6 months but never heard them croak. How big are they? have any pics?

Would love to see some!

I have piccies on my home PC so I'll post some tonight. The male [the bigger fish] is about 5cm and the smaller fish [female] is about 3cm.

I love them too, beautiful fish, very under appreciated because they are not flashy. Mine have beautiful blue neon eyes but no matter how hard I try I cannot capture a picture showing the colour, it seems to be they only show them in certain lights.

I was incredibly lucky to hear them croak, I was sitting right beside the tank and it is fairly quiet in that area, it was quite a faint sound and I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't heard them do it again

:D

go to www.tinypic.com... upload a pic there..

then paste the part that has the ''

or photobucket.com
or imageshack dot something
i personally use photobucket, :)

The behaviour you are describing sounds like breeding behaviour but could also be a show of dominance. Assuming you have a male and female, however, they are probably breeding. Are you sure there's no nest? These fish tend to 'hide' their nests quite well under leaves and they aren't as large as some of the typical top-dwelling gourami species. Anyway, normaly you'll see this kind of thing a few times before the nest is built but a lot more frequently afterwards. I would expect there to be a nest personaly, but it could simply be that the male has not got round to it yet (or, if he's very 'young and inexperienced', may not have worked out he needs one :p).

Good luck with them BTW! Croakers are beautiful  and hearing them sing is a treat every single time.

Sorry only just seen your reply!

I've had a good look, there's no nest as of yet, he is quite a young male [He's about 7 1/2 months old]. Because I got them from a private breeder I'm quite lucky to know their history, the male was about 6 months when I got him and I was told they were just starting to spawn but obviously things have been interrupted by their move and they've only really started to settle down.

I've been observing them recently and she has got little bolder, she's not hiding in amoungst the plants so much and she comes out and swims aboout now so hopefully that means she'll be a little more receptive to his attentions which might just encourage him to build his nest! :D
