Love My Fish But......

Got to say i love my fish..........especially since i moved into the cichlid world !!

But here is the problem........i have two blue acaras and a firemouth (and yes they do a bit of posturing ) but they are doing brilliantly - growing well - feeding well- nipping my fingers when i clean the tank..............couldnt ask for much more


i had eight black widow tetras which were a rescue job from the toilet.........they looked like they were doing ok and recovering but slowly and surely they are dying off from tail rot......i thought i had finally resolved this through meds, i was down to the last two - one of which had lost half his tail which is now nearly grown back


BUT today he has another growth on his tail !!!!!!!!!!!!

then i come to my peppered corys.........i had 6............fine for two weeks then lost two......realised the temp was a bit high so i turned it down........and no more losses for a month.........then within two days two more dead.............then the final two kicked the bucket in the last two days a month after the last fatality ............they always appeared to be healthy......feeding well, active then BOOM!!!

so now i have a tank where the plants are thriving, the stats are good, three brilliant cichlids, one poorly tetra, one stunted tetra and one SAE which is indestructible......................


any ideas why my cories and tetras are dying?

oh and i also lost a perfectly healthy plec after a month

Small fish in with bigger aggresive cichlids.

Fin rot can be stress caused so could be water issues or simply stress from being chased by the cichlids, more likely the second if the cichlids are doing well.

aye i think i will just see how it goes......

the thing is i never ever saw the cichlids bothering the smaller fish ever???

i'm gutted about the corys though

the tetras i expected to struggle considering the condition they were in when i got them............

and since the tetras reduced in numbers the cichlids (apart from the firemouth) have become more secretive???

I had a very had time finding good corys. I lost 30 Cory cats yes too many. My water was perfect I was doing daily wc they still would die. No signs of illness it was annoying. I even went and got a detail water report to see if it was my water. They still all would die after week In my tank. I thought I would never have Cory cats. Then I got some from a better store and they are doing great even spawned a few times. Even raised a few I still have them.

So the Cory cats could just be a bad batch. I know mine were. The tetras you say were a rescue. Sometimes you can't save them all. I tried to save a CAE that came with my 80 gal tank. He died the next day he was too long gone the stress from the move killed him.

thats a little bit more reassuring.....the tetras i knew i would have problems with they were in bad state when i took them on, its the cory's that i cant figure out though.........literally they can swimming around, feeding well, no sign of illness then 5 minutes later one is dead..............

I have also encountered 'poor' peppered cories specifically, thriving in a planted, well filtered tank, with many healthy fish, and gradually dying off one by one... I think good cories are expensive cories.

I can't keep corys with my cichlids because the keyholes hound them constantly.
