My red lotus which I was delighted with growth wise has today shed about 4 leaves that are very wispy
This has coincided with a rise in temperature as the outdoor temp has risen so now about 28.9

Also it has shot about 5 big leaves to the surface of my tank which is 24 inches high all the older leaves are about 8 inches high and are the leaves that the plant came with

also the bulb I have noticed isn;t under the sand its held on by a couple of roots that are in the sand

Is this normal behaviour or is my plant poorly?

Thanks Simon

from what i know of lotus plants if you want bushier growth you shouldn't let them reach the surface, as for the other stuff i dont know

To me it sounds like your plant has 'realised' the water surface is where it is and growth from now on will shoot to the same height. Its very common with lotus' plants. Erm, as for keeping it low in future you can try trimming off leaves that get to a certain height. For arguments sake cut every leaf off once it gets between 18/20", figuratively speaking it aught to keep growing there or there abouts if my principles are correct.

The shedding of leaves i can only assume are because it has realised where the light is at the surface and so its focussing its growth toward that.

As for the roots, i'd say its fine, just tuck the sand up around it and let it continue to take hold. So long as the bulb isnt completely buried you should be fine. I've had crypts that are only held down by a few roots buried deep, with the remainder of the plant hovering a little above the substrate. New growth soon sorts itself out in time...

In truth i'm sure i speak sense, if not someone will correct my errors. But it should be ok, 'should' :)

cheers for the comments

I was wondering if it was the new growth that caused this only thing that concerned me was the fact it was 4 leaves today that went all in one go :good:
