Lost A Gbr, Think I'm Losing The Other

Humm, you've added the meds now by the sounds of it, so mebe I'm a it late...

No signs of HITH in the photos that I can see. The male's weight looks fine to me also

The swelling could be consistant with Bacteria, parasites and organ failure. I personally don't think bacteria. I can't convince myself that the eye on the male was abnormal TBH, there is no haemorrhaging (blood under the skin) and the scales are not raised as you would expect with dropsey. I doubt you have the equipment for autopsies, and have likely disposed of the bodies now, so you cannot really confirm or rule out bacteria as a cause. The Interpet Anti-internal bacteria med is really strong though, and can wipe Bio-filters IME, so I'd only use it if you are 100% certain that your problem is bacterial

Parasites are a possibility, but again cannot be a confirmed/ruled-out cause without autopsy, unless you can confidently say that the long stringy white thing on the female was definitely a worm of some form?

Organ failure is another possibility. It can cause the swellings without raised scales or other symptoms, or with the stringy poo. It is usual to come across, especially two together, unless there is an underlying cause. One such cause would be poisoning. For some unknown reason, my gut feeling is screaming at me that this may be the cause.

I would probably do a large (50% ish) water change, using your tried and trusted tap supply before the Python, and have the water at your tap tested by the local water board. Just tell them you suspect that there may be a water quality problem with that tap, and they will send someone out with a full lab-grade test kit and test for pretty much everything under the sun before leaving you a nice report. Any issues will be fixed for you if found. Otherwise, you can rule out the change of water supply as a likely cause :good:

Nope! Not at home right now, and probably don't even have the meds on hand (I know I have a couple stocked, but not sure what they are)

I can't confirm that it was a worm, I just know it didn't look like normal waste. It was very hard to get a good look at it because she was resting at the bottom of the tank, but it was white, thin (almost like a piece of thread), see through and seemed to almost have little tiny holes in it. Maybe not holes, but it didn't seem completely solid. It may just be a coincidence too, who knows. Maybe she was constipated, but something else killed her. Unfortunately I didn't have any notice with the male, but I do know for sure he didn't have anything coming out of him when I had to take him out of the tank.

Yeah I'm thinking it wasn't something extremely toxic, otherwise all of my other fish would be dead as well. But knowing how sensitive GBRs can be, it doesn't surprise me that they were the first to be affected. :( I just hope whatever it is, the other fish can make it through. I have a beautiful pair of Kribs that I would be heart broken to lose!

This sounds like a good plan. After being spoiled by the Python, now I'm scared to use it.

Translucent poo can mean the fish isn't eating, internal parasites.

I saw her eat the day before she died, but she definitely wasn't eating the day she died.

If the Wormer Plus is as good at worms as it is flukes, it isn't worth bothering with. Try get some Levamisole based Reptile wormer if you can (Bephar Wormer is what I used on my Discus with success) and dose the amounts as per the instructions for the Reptiles. You need an idea of the weight of your fish though...

Soak the needed amount in a cup with some frozen food for about an hour and then offer as food after rinsing thoroughly through a fine net :good: I'd starve them down for a day first though, they can taste it and don't like it IME  repeat offering just medicated food for five days. Only feed medicated food.

If you can get Flubendazole, that will be best. I have a (illegal in the UK) source for it, but it takes me a while to get to and hence is why I used reptile wormer last time, needed the meds fast :good:
