Looking to do science fair project on genetics of fish. Since time is short.. livebearers.. swordstails, platys seem to be the easier??

So simple genetics- color? looking for which color dominant etc.

IE orange swordtail crossed with black gives ??

Can anyone point me in the right direction to find the genetics behind the fish?

Cheers

Black in general is a stronger gene...

You will be challenged finding reliable information about any fish that you buy for your project. Almost any fish at the LFS is a platy/swordtail cross in order to get the color and body shape that is desired. Since the breeders have manipulated things so much, it can be very hard to know your starting point. A good project might be to breed some domestics and see what you get as resulting fry. Creating a good picture of the genetic composition of the adult pair might be all you could expect to do in a single school year. Dominant / recessive type information should be available from the Xiphophorus resource center if you correspond with them, but defining what you actually have will be completely up to you. That leaves you using available information on dominance and the results of a breeding that you evaluate to determine the adults' genetic makeup.
