Long And Thin Or Short And Fat?

Depends on the size of your living room :hyper:

Is there not an option for a long tall fat one??
That's a cube. o_O Lol. Hmm... a room full of fish.

Well this couple look pretty happy!

Although that tank is cool, size wise, everything else, I find a bit boring and drab.. I dunno, if your gonna go big, do it right i.e. 20,000 cardinal tetras LOL
Those are tiny fish... get a bunch of cichlids that are both huge and colorful. LOL Or tons of guppies. o_O Or hoard all species of Corydora in there.

You wouldn't need tons of guppies...Just one male and one female.... You'd be overstocked in no time at all :hyper:

Still tons of them in the end.
I never had overstocking problems as most of my fry died, but almost always there were a few lucky survivors. And I've always separated them after I've found them under the hoplos so it wasn't because of losing them to fish.
Biggest batch I ever managed to get to adulthood were 10 guppies. Mostly green-tailed, but some had awesome flame-like tails.
And those were the last batch of guppies though. They probably ended up sterile after so much inbreeding, as the females never got pregnant.

Cheers for all the advice, the longer one it is.

Also as a bonus its the cheaper one :good:

Thanks

Duncan

Doesn't mean it will be cheaper in the long run, your need a more powerful filter or two, to push the water around and/or even a powerhead too. Which starts to add up. :) Not forgetting more lighting. Possibly two starters instead of one for the additional tubes you will need to light it.

Cheers Tizer, I have on order a Eheim 2215 Cannister filter that is rated upto 350L tanks do you think this will be alright for the 6ft tank? I also have a new 150w heater but was thinking of getting another one and have one each end. I will also look into power heads as I have not heard of those before.
On lighting I am not going to have any to start with as not planting much and it will be in well light room, also it will have a glass top for more light, do you think that will be alright?
Cheers

In general, taller tanks look better at a glance. Unless you get some unusual fish, the fish will not care. Look at the room where you plan to keep the tank and try to imagine both of them in place there. Does either one cause traffic pattern problems or such? Your 4 foot one was deeper front to back so is that an issue at your location? Don't forget that the tank will not be against the wall, it will be out a few inches so that you can do maintenance on it more easily.

Cheers Oldman, room size is not an issue, both will fit in the space I want it and the table I have will hold both nicely.

Think I have decided on the 6ft one, now looking at stocking plans.

i would probably get a second filter, have two of them hooked up, that one only turns over 620 litres per hour, once it has media in it and filter floss, its probably only about 500lph, maybe not even that much. Plus no lighting, even in a light room, its really going to show off your fish very well, plants or no plants.

i prefer longer, shorter tanks. more floorspace for the literage, means more catfish and plecs. and i love catfish and plecs. my tank is 4ft but only 15" high, great for lots of bottom dwelling fish. its also easier to get your plants to the top of the water, and i guess also better for growth, as the light has less water to travel through ????

i have a 330L tank 54" long 20"deep and 19" tall and i have two filters Ex1200 and two external heaters one 300w one 200w all work perfectly :) i would go along with tizer and get two filters :) do you know what fish your going to put in it yet?

I would be very certain that you have an extremely strong and substantial table - Either one of these tanks will be extremely heavy when full and unless your table is super solid I would be really worried that it may collapse.

Cheers for all the comments guys.

here is a link to the Tank journal I have not bought the tank yet but that thread has all my current ideas for stocking and equipment. Currently looking at new filter. Going to get some more bigger heaters and don't worry about the table it will definitely be able to handle the weight, I don't know how much 300L of water plus tank and fish and accessories weight but it handle's my 120Kilos with out even flinching, on occasion I have need to jump up and down on it (long story) and it didn't even bat an eyelid, so i am sure it will be fine.

Cheers

Well you will be looking at least 300kg (or more depending upon how you decorate the tank).

Don't forget that you standing on it (or even jumping!) is only temporary and when your tank is full there will probably be more than triple your 120kg on it constantly
