Hi Folks
don't know if anyone heard this.
London Zoo are searching worldwide for a Mangarahara cichlid. Extinct in the wild they have 3 males and are looking for females in particular to try to save the species from total extinction.

Thought this might be a good place to bring it to wider attention.

Interesting! Shame they did not give a scientific name in the article. There are actually quite a few avid Madagascan cichlid keepers in the UK so you never know! I wonder if the zoo has got in contact with any of the rare species importing shops like Pier and Oddball Express?

This fish is extinct in the wild due to a dam on the river so no more will be imported from the wild. do those shops import this type of fish from breeders overseas?

As far as I know both import their Madagascans from breeders as like you say they are extinct in the wild - its also one of the areas where it is not very safe for collection from the rivers.

In a few years quite a large number of the cichlids in South America will be in a very similar situation - which is a very sad thought but somewhat inevitable :/
