Local River Fish - Suitable For Aquariums

Many moons ago ( when I was still in primary school)... a friend of mine (living on a farm with a river canal flowing through the farm) used to bring fish to school and sell them to the other kids... he was never short of pocket money....

The fish was what we commonly know as a Ghieliemientjie, (scientific name - Barbus trimaculatus) and because it is an indigenous fish, it is illegal to keep here in SA..

Personally, I think this fish will make an excellent aquarium fish...

I'm just wondering... are they being kept in aquaria elsewhere in the world?? (not really colourfull, but interresting fish)....

Just for interest sake... The SA angling record for this fish is 0,7grams.... (must've been some fight to land the fish.

I get an awful lot of hits when I do a Google search for those fish Ludwig, far more than for fish I commonly keep. I think that means they are better known to the aquarium trade than the fish in my own tanks. They are calling them 3 spot barbs as a common name. Fish don't get a common name when they don't have any commercial value, another indication that they are traded.
