Does anyone know where I can get live tubiflex worms or bloodworms? I can't find them online or in any stores! I really want to try using some of the really living worms instead of just frozen and freeze dried.

you're better off with frozen, espacially Hikari brand, as they gurantee sterilization.

Live foods might carry bacteria and infect your tank...

as for where to find them, i looked around all the stores near my place and got the same answer from everyone. There's not a demand big enough for them to make it worthy carrying live foods except crickets and earthworms.

The chance of bacteria does exist with live food but if properly cultivated then it is only a minor concern. There is a big difference between frozen and actual live food nutritionally. Frozen is good but live is slightly better. I just ordered some Microworms for my fry tanks but I want other live food for my larger fish.

I have the same trouble. There is only one store I've ever been to that carried live food (I believe they were blackworms) but that is in San Francisco- now that I am in university farther away I rarely get to go!

Bloodworms are midge larvae, so if you live in an area that has midges all you have to do is set up some kind of outdoor still water source. I collect live bloodworms from our birdbath and outdoor dog water bowl all the time :). They're usually at the bottom hiding in debris/algae, if there is any, and can form little tubes of debris to hide it. I poke at the tubes to get them to come out, then scoop them up.

Live tubiflex are filthy, and supposedly not as good for fish as other varieties of worm, so I wouldn't recommend even trying to find live ones.

Good live worm options that you can order cultures of online are (in order of size, smallest to largest) grindal worms, white worms, black worms, and red worms :)
