Just set up a new 29 gal tank. The light that came with the tank just does not gave off that much light. I'm planning to build a new hood and add two light fixtures. My ? is: What type of bulb and watts do I want ? I have only plastic plants in this tank. Thanks for the help

A 29 is a bad size for modified lamps. Being 30 inches long the closest you can do with fluorescents is a 2 foot tube, which the tank came with. You might want to look into the new LED type fixtures they are selling. I suspect that standard tube size will no longer be a limiting factor with those. Do set one up and make sure you like the lighting before buying though. The darned things are petty expensive to buy. If you want more light and can live with a 2 foot tube, try looking into a T-5 HO fixture. It will be brighter than a standard fluorescent but still will concentrate the light toward the center of the tank.
