Lighting For Community With Bolivian Rams

hi, i have standard t5 lighting in my tank with no facility to dim them down.
my bolivian rams do seem to find them too bright and one of them hides in the plants when the lights are on.
what is the best way to diffuse the light?
i do not have any live plants in the tank.
i know floating plants are a good idea but how can i stop them all going to one end of the tank?
i have tried disconnecting one of the tubes but the lighting unit did not work at all like that.

Have you got white light tubes? if so you can change these to create a less harsh light by using different colour spectrum tubes. It does depend on the manufacturer as to the colour name, but you can go for a white and a blue or a pink/natural and blue or two pink/natural.
