I am wondering why aquarists don’t use 500w halogen bulbs and ballasts? They are very cheep and gf says
“I've said it before - the color temp. is secondary to intensity. Plants aren't really fussy about the color of the light (within reason), as long as there's enough of it they will grow. It is the plant growth that prevents algae, not necessarily the color temperature.
I know these halogens have lots of blue but wouldn’t this be good for a deep tank?
With a few 4” fans on one end , you would be fine with temperature…
Perhaps 10,000k is not "within reason"

I saw 500w halogen with bulb, reflector and ballast for $16Canadian, about 8 brit pounds, that were small and could easily be fitted into a canopy...
 
Too much light. Too much heat. Too inefficient.
