Lfs Store Advice

The people at Pets At Home say to just throw fish in after you've had it running for 3 days.
I thought they were experts.

Don't do that.

Mods and admins recieve 'complaints of slander and legal proceedings'

James.

i had the same happen yesterday
went in looking for a bottle of "prime " and was told wait 3 days you'll be fine
i'll gladly take you to the store

Its best to just refer to them as your LFS

So far I have 1 favourite LFS although they're kinda pricey. They only sell Sera goods and their fish are all healthy. I think the main owner is very passionate about fish that's why. He's a nice old man and he even took the time to explain to me the nitrogen cycle.

I believe the service you get depends on the owner's attitude towards fish :/

At my local P@H, there are even signs on the fron of the fish tanks about "how to properly set up your tank" with the sabove written on it. This is the "preffered method" for P@H.

Ill take a pic of the sign next time i pop in.....

The thing that annoys me is that most casual fishkeepers don't wanna know about the nitrogen cycle, they just want to be able to take stuff home. It's kind of sad that such shops would probably make a higher profit from a bottle of ammonia and a test kit than they do from a single bottle of "conditioner" but tend to go for the easier option.

We have every right to critique our local fish shops in the same sense the media has every right to critique a new film, actor, show, book etc. As long as everything is truthful and factual it is impossible for the powers that be to come down on the forum screaming "libel". If it were, the media industry would be completely screwed. I remember Microsoft trying to have various discussions removed from forums years ago where people were saying there operating systems were rubbish but they didnt get anywhere with it. Its completely impossible to police which is why 99.9% of cases never get further than a snotty letter.

PS, Slander is for the spoken word. ;)

Anyway, not quite sure i want to get into a debate about it, i had all this years ago setting up a forum for a UK newspaper and it was a nightmare, every legal team wanted to bury their heads in the sand :D

+1

I think too often, normally with the chain stores, people are quick to brand a "brand", as poor. This isnt strictly true.

Basingstoke P@H is shocking, i go there to buy bits i need occasionaly, but would never look to converse with the idiots they have on the fish section, but this doesnt mean all P@H are like this. The one that used to be in Andover (not sure if its still there) was great. Granted the fish wernt great, but the staff were nice enough, and knew a fair bit.

Forming and discussing an opinion based on factual evidence is fine, on here or in person, but its another thing to start branding all the same.

You are correct, it would be libel if it is a printed or written media, please excuse my slip in terminology.

Your right to critique shops is trumped by the forum owner's right to not have it on his forum. This is no different than you not wanting people to swear in your house.

In this age of writs etc how does one form an opinion / learn from other's experiences if the mere mention of a brand coupled with a negative comment / fact is enough to get the item pulled? Not criticising the forum owner here - if the pressures are indeed as high as you paint them I would be doing the same thing - but how is one supposed to learn?

Is Free Speech actually Very Expensive Speech if we need to worry about legal fees all the time?

True. While it should be the case that you can say all you like as long as it's factual, the fact still remains that even winning a lawsuit can be costly. Sad times.

Sadly it all comes down to money rather than what's 'right'. If a large commericial enterprise sees fit to start legal proceedings then unless the 'defendant' has a strong will (and the appropriate funds) to fight it then it's simply easier to delete the 'offending' information and avoid the reprocussions.

Or to put it another way....

What exactly would the owner of this forum gain from attempting to defend a comment from one of it's users about alleged poor practice by a LFS that the owner has absoloutely no information on or involement with?
