There are some endemic cyprinids in Lake Inle of Myanmar. Of the 17 endemic species that call Lake Inle home, 5 are cyprinids, four are from the aquarium trade. Emerald dwarf danios, Inle carp, Microrasbora rubescens, Sawbwa barbs and celestial pearl danios live on or near the Lake. These fish call the Lake home because of large masses of floating plants and other plants such as hornwort and Ludwiga for shelter. These fish unfortunately are rare in the wild, and conservation practices must be taken action to help the Lake thrive again.

To house these cyprinids (except Inle carp), you will need a large tank of about 90cm long to give them the space they need. In my opinion, DO NOT mix CPD or EDD into the same tank or they might crossbreed and because they live in different areas of the Shan State. The 2-3ft tank is good enough for small to medium sized cyprinids such as EDD and Microrasbora rubescens. For larger cyprinids such as Sawbwa barbs, a 3ft tank might be needed for a group of them. Feed them live or frozen food and blanched vegetables such as peas occasionally, as the staple diet are fish flakes.

These fish are a joy to keep if you care for them properly. There are many different cyprinids to pick from, but the Lake Inle ones are the best ones if you want to raise endangered fish!
