Hi all

Thinking about getting 6 or so Kuhli Loaches for my 30G. I am a little concerned that my substrate may be too sharp for them. I have heard that if you have sharp substrate the loaches could hurt themselves when they burrow.

Could you tell me if you think Loaches would hurt themselves in the tank? Attached some pictures.

Also I was wondering if mixing Kuhli Loach subspecies was OK. So if I had one black Kuhli loach and five regular would the black one be ok or would it need 5 black Kuhli Loaches for it to be happy?

Thanks in advance!

Yes they would. Loaches need fine grained sand, as they forage for food in the substrate.

Have you looked into play sand? It looks great, it’s cheap, and it’s safe.

Theyd do better on sand, they sift for their food!
Notice how the loach sifts the food out its gills. This is how they eat

(Old video, ive got them on sand now)
