As none of you will remember (
), my kribs had a huge spawn last year. Their second thread id here. I'll admit I was not gung ho about getting rid of the kids. I would take them up to the lfs by the tens, but overall I still had about 35 full grown kribs in that 30 long. They all got along well enough so, meh.
Theeen, a few weeks ago I found one of my little females with a group of eight free swimmers. I was amazed that she even made it that far with them, considering how many tankmates that she has and all, but she did it....with the help of her brother....errm, boyfriend?
So I cleaned out the majority of adults. I left five boys that I could NOT catch. The new parents, and the original parents (aka gram and gramps). I also took out all of the Mexican mollies, except one little bitty newborn who I thought would have a better chance in my tank than she would in a bucket going to the lfs..
I went on vacation last week for five days. I was certain the fry would be gone when I got home. No, instead they'd actually grown!@ And molly was still there too
Molly has now moved over to the nursery end of the tank, and mama krib treats her as one of her own, just like her mom did with the molly fry when she was little. It's crazy. Foster parenting in viscious kribs? Unbelievable. But true.
So I've become fascinated in watching them interact. It's quite fun. But it's become strange the last few days. Big mama and papa have moved down into the cave with little mama and papa and the fry. They're like one bg happy, insane, family. Molly included.
The fry are now old enough to venture out on their own rather than stay in a cluster and laying low as they're told to do. I watch them swim right in front of their uncles, and it's almost like the uncles play with them in a "I'm gonna getcha" funny way, because they're clearly not 'trying' to get them. If they wanted them- they'd have already had them!
And little molly, who is quickly becoming one of my favorite fish, swims bold as brass out amongst them all. It's insane I say!
I'm apparently having a grossly inaccurate learning experience with these guys because if anybody were to ask ME about kribs I'd say they're some of the sweetest lil cichlids ever
