Koi Pond Filter Media In Tropical Aquarium

Hi all,

My farther-in-law has a big koi pond in the garden with a huge filter. Now the pond has been running for a good few years now, fish are healthy and water is very very clear. Im in the process of a fishless cycle in my new aquarium and my question is, can I use a bit of the media from his filter in mine to help it along with the cycle?

I have also used it from my pond with no ill effects.

I use a stock tank as a su8mmer pond, because winters here are a bit too harsh for fish to survive. I use my sponge filters indoors over winter and move them to the pond in summer. The filter media really doesn't know the difference.
