Killing Fish

people wont agree on this (and nobody does on anything for this subject) but with a small fish like that id personally set a pan to boil with plenty of water in it and when the water is properly boiling, jus dunk the fish in.

that does kill them str8 away but i wouldnt try it on anything much bigger than that.

i stress the point the water must be boiling at the time the fish goes in tho.

if it is a tropical fish, the best and quickest thing to do is drop the fish in a jug of water then put in the freezer, the fish feels no pain and goes to sleep.(doesn't wake up)

Freezing is possibly the worst way to do it, the blood starts to get ice crystals forming and its a slow painfull death. I usually catch in net, wrap fish in wet kitchen roll then one swift blow to the head.

is my paracetamol (spelling) way no good?

the fish has carmed down abit dont as i said i dont have the room atm

thanks for the suggestions though

would the no be hard to do0 with such a small fish? if it was 3 inchs then no problem but with it being so small the force wouldnt be that great with a towel softening the blow?

People will probably disagree with me but the best and quickest way to kill a small fish is to simply flick around the head, i know it sounds horrible but its quick and painless (if u do it right and it dies straight away).

:good:

why not get a tank divider and add some melafix to the side with the zebra danio?

im planning to use the tank when these come out of there for breeding

as sparky said im going to just flick it roung the round the head

i assume its best to flick from the top of the head in the centre as hard a possible?

thanks
chris

get a glass of water, put it in the freezer until it has a layer of ice on the top, break the ice and dunk the fish in. it's quick and its fine for those who are squeamish. it'll also be better if you don't know where exactly to flick him and on a fish that small, probably easier. DO NOT put him in a glass of water and then put him in the freezer. that causes more pain for the fish.

when we knock out channel cat to fillet em we hit em with a 2X4 ? just give it a good knock on then head and remember ur doin the good thing ?

Still, I don't understand why you would prefer breeding over the life of a fish :/ I think with some simple meds and tlc the fish could live. Just take a divider, like a previous poster said, and you could cure him, many people have bought rescues with tails ripped off, and many have survived.

Try treating him first for a week and see if you see any improvements. Is he actually isolated now? I would isolate him and try as much as you can for the fishy. I swear i've already spent a good $25.00 on one of my plecos. I have had him for 4 years and didn't want to lose him now.

If you really think you need to put him down. Freeze water until the top is frozen then break the top layer and put the fish in. It will take about 5-10seconds for them to pass on. I have had to euthanize a fish this way before and it is very quick. Also make sure that is original tank water is way warmer then the frozen water, which should register to be about 32F degrees when the top is frozen.

Sorry but I find this disgusting. Members are telling you methods of possibly saving the fish and your response is "i can't because i need the spare tank for breeding". If you think like that, in my opinion you shouldn't be keeping fish at all. Don't be an ass, you should be trying to save the sick fish, instead of getting rid of it to make tank space for any future breeding projects.

And as for the freezing method, do not do this. The amount of threads arguing against this method is huge. It's a terrible method to use, especially when there are many other peaceful methods available to the owner of the sick fish. But as I said, you shouldn't be thinking about euthanasia yet anyway, you should put things in perspective and forget about breeding for the time being.

i had him in a bucket over night with a buble filter (from my hospital tank) with water (added some melafix) from the danio's tank and this morning he/she was dead.

atm the hospital tank has 2 neon tetras with fin rot in
as for the tank being used for breeding it will soon house Galaxy Rasbora's (Celestial Pearl Danio) fry

thanks for the advice anyway

i think clove oil is the only humane way to kill a small fish.

ive recently had to chop the head of 2 of my convicts (too big to do it any other way) and its really not nice!!

i dont get how people think putting a warm blooded fish in cold water and letting it freeze will be painless tho...... ????
Not trying to be rude but why couldn't you have put the fish in a bag and bashed it against a wall.Arn't fish heads tough

All these stupid methods, i have never needed to kill a fish but is it not common sence that putting it in a freezer only -5 below 0 will slowly kill it.You could even put it in a bag and whack it on the head with a brick or something.Kill the brain and an instant death as with everything..

the quickest and easies way to kill a fish is to sever its spinal cord with a knife, it is the nicest way and the fish feels no pain at all.
