Killing Fish

the quickest and easies way to kill a fish is to sever its spinal cord with a knife, it is the nicest way and the fish feels no pain at all.

Spinal Cord!!!!!

NONONONONONO!

Severing the spinal cord does not instantly kill a fish. It simply prevents the nervous ignals from reaching the body from the brain, and just paralyses the fish, leaving it to DIE slowly. To kill a fish either crush/penetrate the brain quickly, dunk it extreamly hot boiling water as previously suggested, or into nearly-freezing water.

The hot version kills the fish instantly but also cookis it, and you may end up with a mess.

The cold one - add salt! the salt, once in the fish, will help prevent ice crystals forming and the water from freezing over. The fish falls into a (relatively) painless sleep in hypothermia and simply doesnt wake up. Some fish that can live in cold water can survive freezing temperatures tho, so to be sure wack the "body" on the head, to ensure the fish doesnt revive itself in the warm sewers.

hope this helps

P.S. i wouldn't recommend clove water, but all is up to the fish keeper. I have only ever euthanised 1 fish in my life - a badly mauled guppy that jumped into the filter.

I had to put down one of my fish last week, I felt I had done everything I could, but in the end he was obviously suffering. As advised on here, i half filled a bucket with cold water, then filled it up with ice cubes. I was told the fish would die in abt 30 secs, in reality it was less than 10.
But I had already done my best to tryand save him, it was as a last resort.

One method i've used recently to cull deformed cory fry, is pour a fizzy drink over them. They die pretty quickly, i guess the high levels of CO2 in the pop causes rapid asphyxiation.

There have been many discussion on here about the most humane methods to kill terminally ill or injured fish. For small fish i would suggest the pop method, it appears to be quick and pretty painless. I would put speed over pain. Some fishkeepers have tried the boil method, and the fish still continues to try and swim in the hot water. The freezing method, yes it will kill the fish but again, not quick enough not to cause distress. For larger fish, it is often impractical to use large enough containers or enough medication to kill the fish, so i would consider decapitation. I know it may not be the least painful, but you have to weigh up the suffering of the euthanasia against the suffering with the illness.

i had him in a bucket over night with a buble filter (from my hospital tank) with water (added some melafix) from the danio's tank and this morning he/she was dead.

atm the hospital tank has 2 neon tetras with fin rot in
as for the tank being used for breeding it will soon house Galaxy Rasbora's (Celestial Pearl Danio) fry

thanks for the advice anyway
chris

Why could the zebra danio not be put in the hospital tank with the tetras? I would have thought you would use the same med for finrot that you would use for an injury, myxazyn and melafix etc.

the tetra's are almost ready to go back all there fins are almost repaired and there starting to look healthy and i didnt want to risk it with another fish and bacterial (spelling) problems

thanks again
hopefully i wont need to read this thread again
