Juwel Rekord Filters

Hi All,

I'd like some information on the layers within a filter and how to clean each one and how often?

I've probably been extremely bad in this area, as a newby to the hobby myself just over a year ago, I never knew you had to even replace any other filter parts apart from the white one at the top! And that was only after putting another in for a few weeks for bacteria to "swap over".

So, any advice would be great on how to clean them out, i've also got a Fluval 1+ in the tank so hopefully giving the sponges a rinse out in tank water in a bucket, will mean it'll clear up quickly after.

Before I removed my internal Juwel box filter, I used to swish the sponges in a bucket of tank water every week, as the filter seems to get bunged up pretty quick. Don't replace the sponges unless they are literally falling apart... that's a load of rubbish what the companies write about changing sponges. If we did what Elite say in their leaflet we'd be buying new sponges every 6 weeks and the tanks would be under a constant cycle.. not good.

Personally, i'd remove the carbon sponge as it's useless after a week or so anyway (so i've heard) and put a normal Juwel sponge in it's place for more surface area for the bacteria. You can keep a fresh carbon sponge in a cupboard if you need one after medicatying or something.

Silly question: Which one is the carbon sponge, the very top one?

It is the second one down and is black.

I squeeze the top large blue sponge out every time I clean as it gets clogged pretty quickly. I don't bother cleaning the lower one as that is mostly shielded from gunk. I took the carbon (I want the tannins to stay in) and the filter floss (Slows flow down) Out.
