Hi everyone

I've just managed to get hold of a used Fluval 205 external filter, which I intend to use in my 110 lure Juwel tank.

What should I do initially to prepare the new-yet-used filter, and how do I go about removing the built-in Juwel filter without destroying my tank?

Also, on a side note, if my heater okay to simply be against the wall of the tank? Will it harm my fish if they get too close?

Regarding first use of your new filter it depends on if it has "live" media that you want to save. If so, you can just give it a little bit of a clean in some olf tank water and set it off running.

If you don't want to keep the media that is in it, or if it doesn't come with any media or has old stuff in it you'll need to buy some of your choice (a google search will tell you what normally comes in them, media wise). Give it a good clean just with some warm tap water or if it's really nasty you can use salt but just be sure to rinse it really well. Then move the media from your Juwel internal to the Fluval. And you're ready to go.

As far as removing the juwel filter you'll need a box cutter with a nice sharp blade. There are several silicon blobs along the back of the filter. Push the blade out and gently prise the filter box away from the glass while cutting with the blade until you've cut through all of the silicon. Any remaining on the glass scrubs off pretty easily.

If you are going to use your Juwel heater you just need to buy yourself a couple of suction clips to attach to it. They are just a C-shaped clip with a suction cup on the back. You can find them on ebay or in your LFS. If you are worried about your fish touching the heater (for example if you have plecs, as they are notorious for burning themselves) you can buy a heater guard for it, again, look on ebay :)

Hope that helps!
