Hi, I may be getting a juwel 180 which will be planted or a mbuna tank (any help in choosing?)

this is my proposed stock list (all 1M to 3F unless noted)

4 yellow labs
4Melanochromis johannii
4 saulosi OR http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=142226 4 of these guys

does anyone have any recommendations on fish which have different colours for males and females as well?

thanks

I would reccommend Cyaneorhabdos instead of the Johanni - very similar in appearance but less aggressive. The same probably goes for the Saulosi over the Mpanga, which IME are fairly aggressive fish.

That's not to say the Johanni or Mpanga can't work - they can, my suggestions are just a safer option given the tank size. :good:

yes, I thought due to the small nature of the tank some less aggressive species would be best - unfortunately I don't anything about Mbuna :D

and thanks for the snappy reply :good:

you could add some afra with the Cyaneorhabdos and the labs there is some aggression there but the Cyaneorhabdos and the afra should be about equal and neither will be bothered about the labs and the alfa male in the tank should be stunning both afra and Cyaneorhabdos look great in full colour.

so labs, afra and Cyaneorhabdos but no saulosi?

and is this the afra you're talking about?

There are loads of C.Afra species but most have similar temperaments and stay small by Mbuna standards. Cobue are great fish though. :good:

I'd reccommend a beefy external filter - i use fluval 305's and Eheim pro 2 (2026 should be plenty). Basically anything that is rated for a tank slightly larger than yours would be ideal - plenty of filtration is important.
