hi guys just bought a bigger tank to upgrade my other tank.

its a 2nd hand juwel vision 180 have a couple of questions sorry if they have been asked before hand

no 1 what would you recommend doing regards cycling as my other tank is only a 60 liter tank never had to cycle a tank before.

no 2 ive been told that the filters that come with them arnt so good so was looking to buy another either internal or external could anyone give me some advice with that

thanks in advance

Hi there, welcome to the forum! Personally i would set up your new tank, place half of your filter media in the filter of your new tank and let it run until you get good readings from water tests. I would also consider an external filter so that you gain more space within your tank. You can remove the filter and casing as it is only siliconed onto the glass.

sounds like a really stupid question but im on a steap learing curve with tropical fish as my ex girlfriends dad did all that sort of stuff for me so sorry for the stupid questions that i will ask.

when you say media im guessing you mean the water thats in side the pump / sponges ?
also any particular pump you would recommend thanks

okay guessed as much but wanted to double check first

would a 200w heater be enuff for this tank ?

No problem mate. The media is classed as anything inside the filter, such as sponges, ceramic bio-rings, activated carbon etc. This is where the 'good' bacteria lves. No need to worry about the water, as there is no beneficial bacteria that lives in the water. Just remember to use a dechlorinator like tapsafe in your water as the chlorine in the tap water can harm the bacteria in your media.

As for external filters, there are a number of makes available. The Fluval and Eheim are considered very good, also there are tetratec, APS, Aqua One... There are a fair few. Just do a bit of research and see which you can get for the cheapest.

200w heater should be fine mate :)

okay thanks for the info will do a bit of research now and see what i can find out.

last stupid question for now whats the differance between a pump/filter and a powerhead or am i confusing myself thanks

When you say you're upgrading from a 60L, has that tank been cycled. Is it a new tank? or been running for a while?
What stock do you currently have? Is everything being moved across, or are you going to run 2 tanks?
Sorry for so many questions?

the 60l tank has been running now for about 2munths now all seems to be going good now had a few fish die at first, but i didnt set the tank up my exs dad did i didnt have a clue about tropical fish at that point.
which is y im on a steap learning curve and making mistakes like every1 dose at first

the tank currently has the following

1 pleco
3 panda corrys
2 platys
2 widow tetra(pink/blue)
7 neon tetra
4 mollys
10/15 guppies

all the fish will be transferrd but shall set the new tank up with new gravel and so on as i want to keep the 60l tank as a breeding tank

hope this helps anyother info just ask m8 its good to be able to speak to people who no what there doing

Ok.so if there haven't been any more deaths lately, it sounds like the bacteria on your current filter is starting to handle the fish you currently have.Do you check for ammonia & nitrite levels, and/or do regular water changes.?
If your current media is coping (2 months doesn't seem that long), you could in theory place it all into your filter in the Vision and move all the fish across.I did the same thing when moving from a 40L to 180L, and did lots of testing & water changes, but i had a lot less fish.
The Juwel filers aren't too bad IMO.This method would mean there wouldn't be any media in the 60L but do you really want to cycle 2 tanks at once?
If you get the Vision up and running with a filter of your choice, Juwel or otherwise. You could then at a later date put some media from the Vision back into the 60L.
That's my view.Don't just accept it, but wait to see what others post.Maybe you should get a better feel for running 1 tank before attempting 2? Hope that doesn't sound patronising

stu

no thats fine stu thanks for your say the thing that gets me and confuses me is that he had 3 tanks and didnt cycle any of them he maybe did a slight water change or top up every munth or so never did anywater testing or anything like that

he bought his latest tank filled it up with water 2days later added fish and they all survived lool

the research ive done has also pretty much told me y my fish where dieing so much as no bactiria was added or anything to my tank 3 days after adding water i was told add the fish i want so i did.

gunna take a trip to my local aquatics tomorow (woodford aquatics) they seem to have a good name and have a chat with them and get some more info so thanks for all the helps guys :)
