I went to go feed my betta today, and then saw this little critter gliding over the glass near the feeding ring. He even started crawling on top of the water  Lucky I noticed him. At first I thought it was one of my two olive nerites, but it was much too small and had a more pointed shell shape than the nerites. He must have snuck in on some of the live plants I added to my tank, even though I did a potassium permanganate soak. Anyways, diregarding how he got in there, what do I do with him?

Here's a picture of the little guy, and my fingernail for reference

I captured him in a little jam jar until I can find out what to do with him. I don't want him back in the tank in case he decides to make more little snails all over, even though my tank might be infested already for all I know. Do I smoosh him and throw him in the garbage? Throw him in the garden? Salt him? See if seaworld will take him? (jk)

I really like snails and feel bad for even thinking about killing him, but I don't know what the repercussions could be if I allowed him to live in my tank. I'd rather not have to deal with snails.

Toss him back into the garden or collect a few more for escargot. =P

cheak your tank well, there are bound to be more. IMO its fun to salt slugs and snails, that one is to small tho

put it back i dont think it will cause any
harm its not as if its going to over run the tank like

there a lot of duplicate posts on here
can someone remove some of them please

ive found three of these in my tank. i accidently shot one back in, but i have two in a glass with some java moss and they have been there quite some time and the little glass isnt over run. i was going on if there was only one and it didnt pop out loads of babies then it could go back in lol, but they have just stayed in the glass :look:

I ended up dumping table salt on it and throwing it in the garbage, just so you all know.

Snails breed like crazy! Watch around your filter as that's where they will breed and it could clog the filter up. What I tend to do is look for the bigish ones every day and toss them into the garden. This helps cut down on the small ones and keep them all under control.

Add some garlic, white wine, butter....

Seriously, though, if you have a problem with snails, I found that not feeding my fish for almost a week will take care of the situation quite well. Most small fish will tackle small snails if you're not feeding them flake food. They will also eat the eggs readily. I had a plakat betta once that would kill and eat snails as big as his head. He was pretty vicious and you could hear him bang the snail against the glass to crush the shell.

Oh, he was arguably one of my favorite bettas. Named Hunding after a Wagner hunter guy. Nice-sized plakat. He was the one that got me liking plakats better.

Ah, but seriously off-topic. Sorry. :look:

Are you french?.....

Im here all week..

On a serious note, snails only become a problem if you are overfeeding. Dont overfeed and the snails run out of food to eat so die and dont breed. or just feed little and often so the food doesnt reach the substrate.

Or, if your stocking permits, and everything else is ok, get some shrimp/corries to turn over your substrate to eat and excess food.

To get rid of a snail problem,

remove any that you see with your hands or tweezers and get rid of them, or crush them against the glass (not recommended)

put a piece of cucumber in the tank after lights out, wait about 1-2 hours and then remove it. you should find a fair few snails on it. repeat this process as desired. or stick multiple pieces in various locations around the tank to gather more snails.

You could get an assasain snail, but you only need one. they eat alot of snails and if you get more, you will just end up with loads of them because they breed. assasains cant breed on their own. but you will have a commitment to them, after they have cleared your tank they still need feeding!!! :good:

if you have a small fry tank/breeding tank, you could put the snails in there, they iwll be beneficial for a small tank and then you can pick a few out at a time to feed to your assasain.

if the small tank becomes over run, you can simply empty the tank and give it a wash!

This is the part I had a problem with
Really, I've heard all the tricks to get snails out of a tank, even though I don't need any of that yet (so far there was only one snail). I was wondering how to safely dispose of them without wreaking havoc on the local ecosystem or anything.

I'm hoping salt and the garbage was the right thing to do with that snail.
