And they said not to put bio media in a fluval internal filter, that if a bit of the media broke off it could destroy the impeller (the fan blade bit i assume). So im a little bit gutted, because i wanted to add some and help keep everything filtered fresh. They also said that the internal filters dont do as much biological filtering as an external or sponge filter because the internal does mechanical filtration aswell.

My question about this is, do you have an internal filter? Do they do the filtering well enough? How do external filters work? Do you need alot of room for one?

The guy at the store felt a bit sorry for me and gave me this little media box with fully mature bio media in it so it would help things along. Thats in the corner of my tank attached to my air pump now.

well the internal filters<fluval i know of have sponge inside and this is fine<sufficent>
what size tank?
i have 2 internals with sponge and a external fx5<fluval with sponge and hexagonal cyramics/bio media.....
externals are great<nothing to see inside tank except pipes,,

Its 126L tank, its being filtered by a Fluval 3 and a Fluval 2.

How do the externals work? Is it literally 2 tubes dangling in each end of the tank? Does this create surface movement to exygenate the water?

yes its two tubes an intake and outlet,,,,,,yes it causes suface flow,,,,,,as does your internals, you should be ok with those two :good:
have one at each end of the tank<i would put them so that the water outlet is a waters surface so it breaks the water thus oxygenating the tank :good:
remember to always wash the sponge in tank water only
