Joint Cycling?

So, a while ago I read about something they called "Joint Cycling". Basically, if you have the new filter before the tank, you can put the new filter into the established tank and run both the filters together and cycle the new one? Does that really work? And will it mess with the ammonia or anything? And how do you know when the filter is ready??? Thanks!

You can do this but I dont see the point if you can take mature media and cycle straight away.

it might never be ready.

your old filter might have enough bacteria to keep the tank clean. there is a small chance your new filter won't develop any.
As posted above the best way is to put some of the old media into the new filter. 1 3rd is a good amount.

Well, I'll plug it in and give it a whirl anyways! I have nothing to lose, the filters just sitting around, might as well experiment with it!

Actually, I've heard that if you do this, eventually the two filters will hold half the bacteria each, so once you take the second filter away, your first filter will only be able to support half your stocking.
