Basically, I have a Jewel Rekord 120 tank and I have a problem with my filter. I have to change the white (top) filter pad weekly, but recently, the flow from the filter dies right down after about 2 days. I change the white filter pad and it increases but then dies again 2 days later.

Any ideas of what the problem could be? I don't want to have to change this filter pad every 2 days or it will cost me a fortune! My tank is 5 weeks old and fully cycled as water levels have stabilised.

I don't know why your flow keeps dying but you can get big packs of white poly pads which fit juwel filters on ebay for a fraction of the price. :)

i have the exact same tank and i just use filter floss costs less than 1 of those stupid white pads which are the same thing just cut into shape

Phoenixfish - None of my plants have died but 1 particularly bushy one is quite close *to the filter* - has been there since way before this started to happen though.

Smurfy - What is filter floss?

its a bit like cotton wool enquire @ your lfs its really cheap

I don't use the juwel white filter pads there to expensive, i just put some filter floss at the top, it's cheap you buy it in bags.
Your filter want removing and give it a good clean, bang the tube in the sink to unblock it and rinse it through, take the filter apart and give in a good clean and the impellor.
I also have another filter in my tank as i don't rate the juwel filters.

I'm right in thinking that I should just squeeze the filter sponges in *tank* water?

What's the impellor?

You only touch one blue sponge when its really gunked up and slightly rinse in a bucket of tank water.

The filter will have a grey outer case you pull that off which can be hard at times to get to the impellor, which you will find inside once you have removed the outer case.

Thanks! I will give it a go. I didn't think the filter case came off though? Seems like it is attached to the tank?

You remove the outflow tube first, then you pull the filter out of the attachment tube inside the black box, you have to maintain them or it will stop working as they get gunked up.

Ok, I get what you mean now - the case that holds the filter sponges - not the black box that is attached to the tank.

Thanks for your help! :)

I’ve quite literary just finished cleaning my Rio 180; just giving your sponges a really good rinse in some tank water will restore most of your water flow. But then as part of my routine once a month I take the power head out clean with it a bottlebrush & using a similar but bigger brush to clean the main chamber.

Bex did you manage to get the filter sorted.
