Glad I haven’t bought JBL substrate since the start of last year then 
I suppose being a company as big as JBL quality control isn’t always 100%. I have used a few JBL products since I started keeping tropical fish and I have found little to no issues. JBL denitrol saved my tank once from crashing during a fish in cycling.
I’ll keep the check valves in the back of my mind if I ever go the next stage of CO2. I would prefer to avoid the scenario you encountered
