Fermented barley straw filter material restricting algae growth
Prevents cell division in all types of algae.
30 g barley straw for freshwater aquariums of up to 250 liters.
Effective for 3 months.
No harmful side-effects for fish and plants.
Free of chemicals, but instead with natural, specially fermented and bacteria-enriched activated barley straw - JBL research leads the way. Simply place JBL BioFerm filter material in a filter material bag and then put into the filter, within a short period of time all kinds of algae will disappear in freshwater aquariums of up to 250 litres! The active ingredients of the specially fermented barley straw cause the algae to die off - even floating algae (green water)! Comparative tests have shown that the type and extent of fermentation has a decisive influence on the effectiveness of barley straw products. The barley straw must be organically grown, i.e. without the use of pesticides and artificial fertilisers. Long-term tests have shown no negative influences on fish and plants. It is believed that substances released by the straw are absorbed by the algae on contact. These substances substantially reduce the metabolic rate of the algae, decreasing the frequency at which the algae divides.

There are a great number of algae treatments - but which one really helps? JBL has recently launched BioFerm, a filter material made of fermented barley straw designed to help against algae.
Fermented barley straw is untreated barley straw which has undergone alkaline treatment, been washed and neutralised, before being enriched with special bacteria which break down cellulose. Finally it is aerobically fermented in a watery solution. After several weeks, the algae-reducing effect ceases.
When JBL BioFerm is used in a filter, the extracts released quickly stop algae cells dividing. This is visible within only a few days, e.g. in the case of thread algae, through clumping which is followed by the algae dying off. At this stage they can easily be removed mechanically.
An immediate stop to algae cell division prevents the algae growing further and increasing - independent of the type of algae. An exception to this are blue-green algae (Cyanophyta) which, in taxonomic terms, are between algae and bacteria. Fermented barley straw has no significant effect on these organisms.
In order to guarantee a constant level of effectiveness for JBL BioFerm, each individual production batch is subjected to a function test:
The same quantity of floating algae (Anabaena flos aquae) are added to two test aquariums. 10 g of the BioFerm batch are added to the green-coloured water of one aquarium. The water in the two aquariums is compared after 48 hours. The tested batch of JBL BioFerm is only released for sale if the treated water is crystal-clear.
The aquarium-keeper is therefore guaranteed an algae preparation which works biologically without any harmful side-effects and which really is 100% effective!

well i used that jbl stuff for another tank which i was doing a fish in cycle with, didnt know about fishless
so i thought if it says it works then its worth a shot, but now i have cycled other tanks and i dont think it works at all

you can always try, its only like £4 isnt it?
I dont have the need for any my tank is fully cycled, just thought I would post a pic to see what people thought, and for information really.
