My cichlids seem to keep ripping it to peices, is this normal?

that depends on what you put in the tank first, the fish generally don't touch any plants which were in the tank before them ime. i have plants in all my tanks, malawi and otherwise. try java fern, java moss, anubias nana, giant vallis or moss balls.

Yeah you can try all of those and thats exactly what Mbuna will do. Amazon Sword is about the only plant i've ever known to survive an Mbuna tank.
