Jack Dempsey

I think I did the same google image search that you're doing  I've seen that one too. The size of the spots in that picture is too big and too spread out.

No need to apologize :p You're trying to help and I appreciate it!
I'm attaching a picture of a Jack that I got off the internet and I used Paint to draw on the size and location of the black spots.

the fish in this pic is a platy with black markings. Black spot disease causes black spots but the spots should all be the same size and round.

Once a fish has black spot disease the black spots do not move. They stay put.

It could be blood spots on the JD. This could be caused by a skin parasite (Argulus) biting the fish and then moving somewhere else. The fish would bleed for a moment and then have little scabs/ sores that appear dark red or black. After a day or two those spots would be gone and if the parasite has moved then new spots would appear elsewhere. They might also have been caused by the fish rubbing itself on something sharp or hard, (gravel or a rock).

Perhaps try doing some 50% water changes each day for a week. Also do a gravel clean each water change. This might help dilute any organisms in the water and help the fish recover. You could also try treating the tank with Waterlife Protozin but it might not make any difference.
I would probably leave it for a few more days and see how things go. If it gets better then don’t worry, but if it gets worse, then treat.

Yeah, I just typed 'black spot fish' into google images and it didn't even occur to me until shortly after posting that maybe the search results had included fish with 'black spots'. Doh!

What's even funnier is that I've actually owned Platies like the one pictured...

I've sent my question into a help site that can hopefully give me an answer. I don't want my poor Jack to be uncomfortable any more.

How is he today is he flicking more.

He's acting pretty normal. I haven't seen him flick at all today. I've been keeping his tank light off since it seems to make him more comfortable. He doesn't stay in his cave as much when the light is off.

Ok just keep a close eye on him.
