Title speaks for itself really, I have 9 pieces of bogwood in my 30g tank, my water looks like a urinal tray after 2 days, even with regular water changes. How can I stop the bogwood releasing it?

Thanks!

I have the same problem even though I soaked the wood for a couple of weeks before putting it in
I don't think there's much you can do except keep doing water changes

You can't really, though it will stop after some time. How long has it been in your tank? Most of us soak our bogwood for several weeks before adding it to our tanks.

Some say carbon in your filter may help with removing tannins.

Water changes and carbon in your filter... other than that you could seal the wood with something (i have forgot the name, lol) but it is safe for fish so it shouldn't harm them. Stops them releasing tannins.

good old bogwood i soaked it and boiled it for weeks but still had tannis, i took it out and went fot driftwood instead. had no problems with it. carbon does work

personally i love tannins. just think of it as good practice for water changing, imagine how glorious your water quality is if you change it every time you dont like the tannin level

I don't mind a little colour as it makes the tank look more natural, but if I leave it more than a couple of days it's a murky brown.
Luckily it's in my edge so water changes are easy
The fish don't seem to mind at all
I'll try the carbon, see if that helps

Seachem Purigen is also very effective for removing tannins.

Well I have bog wood in 2 of my tanks and never had a problem with Tannins :D

Each piece I have placed into a bucket of hot (not boiling) water, changed the water 2 times each day for fresh hot water, and after doing this for a week put the bog wood in the tank. Using this method I have not had any issues with Tannins :good:

I am currently doing the method stated above and I can see a change in amount of tannins each day. Going to java moss tie onto the wood once done and hopefully (fingers crossed) no tannin problems.

I find redmoor and sumatra wood etc. release far less tannins... in case you want to try these in the future?
