I'm well aware that Tiger barbs are nippy little so and so's, and a few weeks ago upped my shoal size to 12 (mixed tigers and green tigers) as one was getting too big for his boots. All was going well, no issues with the harlequin rasboras they share the tank with or the pepper corys so I thought I'd add to the numbers.

I got it wrong. So wrong and boy do I feel awful.

Eight rather lovely cardinal tetras. Immediately on release two were ripped apart. Got the other six out a and into a bucket (yes I know only thing I could think of 'in the moment').

Rushed out, got a 26 litre tank and filled it with water from the big tank. Have put floss from big tank filter into brand new one. Just hoping they survive being 'in cycle' and trying to minimise that all I can...

That's it now. Barbs only in the big tank.

Sooo... What to put with the 6 cardinals in their weeny tank (if they survive cycling) when it's settled? Bearing in mind it's small. Any ideas?

Nothing, Tanks too small for anythig other than a better and some shrimp.

What Techen said, you would be best returning the Cardinals if possible or otherwise rehoming them. Then you could keep a Betta or/and (depends on temperament) some shrimp/snail(s).

Tried that. LFS laughed at me.

If they survive might add a couple of shrimp then. Been tod with the cardinals a betta is a no no as the betta may attack due to bing same colour.

I'd consider a different LFS for the future.  If a LFS is unwilling to work with you, then they don't deserve your business.  Did you still have the receipt?  If so, then I would be informing them that they won't be getting my business in the future.

I'm looking for cardinals... if you wanted to bring them to me. ;)

Oh that LFS has lost me. Luckily my nearest one that I got the 26 litre tank from was a different one!

Return the Cardinals, even if you have to take them to the other one. If you want to set the 26 Litre tank up you do have a few choices. A betta is the main one and depending on his temperament you could have Ember Tetra's, Galaxy Rasboras, Chili Rasboras, Shrimp or Snails with him. Here's a few ideas but if you want the best chance of him being able to live with other stuff, add him last.

8x Chili Rasboras
1x Betta
3-4x Assassin Snails

OR:

8x Galaxy Rasboras
1x Betta
1x Apple Snail

OR:

6-8x Ember Tetra's
1x Betta
5x Amano Shrimp(Cherry Shimp will most likely be eaten)

Or if you don't want a betta...

8x Galaxy Rasboras
8x Chili Rasboras
1x Apple Snail

Have fun with it :) Feel free to PM me with other questions as well, I'll try to answer them to the best of my ability.

Can you get a bigger tank on eBay if you have the room to put it? Will give you a few more options.
